Having got really fed up with lugging our heavy mains, bagless vacuum cleaner up and down the boat stairs, having to plug and unplug the lead all the time which anyway was always getting tangled round something or other, we recently bought the same rechargeable cleaner for the boat as we have at home, and are delighted with the results: light-weight, handy to carry round, charged by genny or motor (or shore power of course), much, much easier to handle than previous monster. Make: Bosch "Move 2-in-1 18V" with separable hand-held vacuum for steps, window frames, etc. At approx. €100 via Amazon.de excellent value for money! However, we have all wooden floors, not carpets (wouldn't want them on a boat).

You mean this? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bosch-BBH-Move-B%C3%BCrstsauger-Handstaubsauger/dp/B001TIW1U4/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411940762&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=Bosch+Move+2-in-1+18V

Wouldn't a damp mop be all that's needed for wooden floors? £5 from B&Q.

My previous boat had a built-in vacuum system, so only a tube with head needed to be inserted into one of three flaps. Opening a flap automatically started the motor. Not sure what make it was but ideal for carpets (in cabins) and hard floors.

That looks like the one - though at £150 that's one hell of an extra margin (75%, with the dubious extra of an overkill UK plug).
And yes, we do have a mop.... Best to vacuum the dust up first though, before mopping, plus a mop doesn't quite cut it for steps, shelves, window surrounds, light fittings and all those those other awkward places where spiders love to congregate.
My money's still on the Bosch rechargeable product, if available at a non rip-off price. I just checked various countries and it's available in e.g. Germany, France and Holland for between €95-115.

Bosch looks interesting, any recommendations for just a handheld rechargeable vac?
