Connecting a calorifier

Another winter project - installing a calorifier so that we have hot water at the end of each day without running the Kabola.

What sort of hose should be used to connect a calorifier to the engine (DAF 575)?

I used HT Hot Water 150 psi 10 bar hose - as labelled and bought in UK.

But if you have a water CH system, better to connect engine calorifier connections to a heat exchanger into CH pipework leaving boiler and heat entire CH system - assuming a calorifier is on CH circuit. The whole vessel and calorifier(s) can then be heated from the engine.

We have 2 calorifiers, a 146ltr for cabins and bathroom and lasts a good 60 hours after switching off the engine.
During spring and autumn days, interior gets to 27C after a few hours motoring with engine heating radiators.

Hi Pete

Try to use non corroding (copper) as much as possible, 15 mm will do nicely. Complete with clips and proper brass hose tail adapters

then you can then make Automotive heater hose too. This is manufactured to withstand the temperature and pressure that can be present in engine cooling systems. Also it will withstand vibration, so use it between the engine and the metallic pipe.

This comes in a variety of sizes, you should not need much more than 5/8" bore, and will probably suffice with 1/2". It is possible to use heater hose in the entirety, depending on the physical location of the engine / colorifier.

Do not use HEP2O type pipe it will burst.

Don't forget to install an air bleed point at the highest point on both runs, and install the flow line to the top of the colorifier coil.

Hope this helps

Pete,

I use car heater hose. Inexpensive, flexible, easy to cut, and
available everywhere.

Same here. I needed new hot water hose to the calorifier and went to a truck shop.
They quickly offered standard vehicle cooling system hose - after all a DAF is just a truck engine!
Cheap and has worked well all year.
Cheers
Graham
