Hello Malcom,

How much do you need from a yard in the way of pressure washing and an
engineer. How much of this will you be doing yourself?

At the bottom end are the barge grid at Strand on The Green or the hard
at The London Apprentice, Isleworth. These are diy options with no
serious power tools available or supply of water. After that you move
up the money scale quite seriously.

regards
Edward.

MSO did us last year very good work but you may find you are there longer than expected (we were told this and it was true) we were ok to live onboard whilst work went on as well.
I got a price previous to going to MSO from the guy at Caversham and unless i misheard him it was very expensive and he had concerns on lifting our 21.5 x 3.7 not sure of the weight.

Odd that, Gordon. The price I had at Caversham was a lot less than mso (who took so long responding to queries they put me off. Perhaps they were busy and didn't need the custom. Still rude though).

Worth nothing that there's no shotblasting allowed at Caversham, as it's an EA owned site, and they have some witch doctor, suit in an office based concerns about paint flakes entering the nearby river... even though they have no such fears about the flakes if they're arduoulsy ground or sanded off!

Yes maybe i misheard him he quoted a price per metre and when i worked it out it was stupid money.
MSO are a bit of a strange breed very relaxed, we had a survey on the Friday and some re plating was mentioned to Jake so we spent the weekend on the dry went in Monday to get a price from Jake and they said hes gone on holiday for a week. I think we spent 6 or 7 weeks there but quite a bit of that was getting a new shaft , bushes and all associated drive bits.
I could not fault their welding or engineering though , no over-plating, the dodgy bits cut out and new re-welded in, i think the Polish lad said 3 or 4 passes on every weld

Many thanks, I need at least 4 days so the grid is not really suitable, I will look into the green, We had booked a local yard months ago who were sure they could slip us but changed his mind last week. MSO are not responding, Caversham can not do anything until April but are beyond my budget.
We are hoping to take the first weather window next year to cross the channel, so had hoped to get the new shaft and prop on before the stoppages, spending the winter months making sure everything works!

Has anyone had experience of the dock on Eel Pie island?

Hello Malcolm,
Not sure about a Dry Dock on Eel Pie. Eel Pie Island Slipways (Ken Dwan) have slipped us twice and provided engineering support on a numbe of occasions. Good engineers and generally good welders. Their winter trade is annual inspections of tideway passenger boats so you may need to get in very soon or wait until the spring.

There is a dry dock being restored on the eyot downstream of Brentford Cut but no knowledge of whether it is yet serviceable or capabilities.

Hello Andy
Many thanks
I had a disjointed conversation with I think Ken? (have spoken to so many yards in the last two days!) mainly by missed answer phone calls, some days I just never seem to be in the right place at the right time!. it sounded like he had a cancelation for a week on Monday and again no DIY work, but helpful. so think I will go with him.

We are in the process of selling our boatyard on the Grand Union and have set a date, weather permitting to go to Europe next year. so we now have something to focus our minds!
