We have an I pad with the cellular connection facility , we simply insert a sim card and we can access the internet via 3G .
We are making the move to Europe at the end of this month and would like to replace the UK sim card with a European one .
I wondered if anyone the same type of device and has already obtained a sim card in Europe .
We shall be spending the first 6 months in Belgium and then moving on into France .

There is no problem getting SIM cards we are in Belgium and use a Proximus card pay as you go you can top up online with a MasterCard gift card which you purchase and load at the post office . Or of course with a Belgium credit card if you have a bank account.

The latest reported, easily obtainable and flexible 'best buys' for mobile Internet are listed in the DBA Knowledgebase, under Communications.

See http://www.barges.org/knowledgebase/communications/mobile-internet-best-buys

All these should be suitable for iPads.

I use my Ipad by creating a wifi hotspot on my smartphone - so if you have a phone that gives you that option you can do without a separate sim for your Ipad (assuming you will be using it within wifi range of your mobile phone 3G connection) by just using the wifi function on the Ipad to link into your phone connection. You may quite often find wifi available at harbours etc anyway. Saves a lot of money as PAYG is expensive and a separate contract may be more than you need and has worked very well for me.

Pete,
a bit of a tangent but my IPad has recently not been able to open threads on the forum - which is why I have been so quiet! It will access the site OK and the Forum page but as soon as it has to go into a particular thread or for instance to access a download for a river on the waterways guide it shows willing but never completes the job. I had no problems up until about a month ago. Any ideas?

I'm sure many people do that. I do..

The current 'best-buy' cost for data using PAYG in France is about €2-3 per Gb. (See http://www.barges.org/knowledgebase/communications/mobile-internet-best-buys)
