I've been pricing up aluminium anodes. I am astounded by the range of prices, I spammed MG Duff's list of retailers so prices are still coming in but for identical MG Duff anodes the prices range from just under £1,000 to just under £300. The £1K is from a large well known marine retailer. MME are best at the moment, supplying their own brand equivalents at well under £200 and being very helpful.

I estimate the value of the aluminium contained in all the anodes I need at £35 based on current scrap prices of 60p/kg!

Agree - brilliant service and all the right metal grades. And even better prices at a boat jumble.

Hello David,

I'm just about to start on the aluminium anode purchasing exercise
myself, so would be keen to know what your take is. Have you tried the
other suppliers on the DBA list? I sent Aberdeen Foundries a web enquiry
from their web site a few days ago and haven't received a reply. I
thought it would be better to go direct to a manufacturer than deal with
a retailer, but only if they want your business!
Keep us posted as to what you find, I'll do likewise.
Thanks
Regards

I have tried all the suppliers on the DBA suppliers spreadsheet that came up on a search for 'anode'.

Aberdeen foundries replied "I am out of office for next 2 weeks.
If you have sent email directly to n.owen and you have an equiry for supply please email to sales-O8uvFgYlSz5ZA6BQlSr9LZJpZx93mCW/@public.gmane.org attention Alan Gordon and you may receive assistance" so I did as he said, no reply yet.

I also emailed 68 MG Duff retailers in 6 different regions. I drew the line at emailing all their retailers.

9 replies so far I will let you know the cheapest.

If anyone is looking for MAGNESIUM anodes, Limekiln Chandlers of Stourport (limekilnchandlers.co.uk) have keen prices and quick delivery.

4 x 1.5kg mag weld on anodes = £62 for the four inc VAT

4 x 2.5kg mag weld on anodes = £90 for the four inc VAT

1x 4.1kg weld on anode = £37 each inc VAT

Evans Marine of Migennes quoted me 66 euros (c£52) each for a 1.4kg mag weld on anode inc VAT and fitting......

Hi there
Four years ago we had great success with a UK guy who sells MME anodes. He was significantly cheaper tnan elsewhere & shipped to Belgium. Not sure if he's still active but he'd be our first port of call.

I have gone with MME direct, easily the best prices and very helpful. I think they gave me 50% off their retail though not sure as I didn't obtain a further discount over their initial very low prices.

In total 12 aluminium anodes (55kg) cost me about £170 plus £35 postage. Almost identical MG Duff anodes from other suppliers ranged in price from £300 (lakesterngear and marineco) to £700 (asap), £800 (anodeoutlet) and, top prize, £998 (force4).

Having looked at my old paint in more detail there is definitely localised bubbling damage from the old magnesium anodes. From my notes the voltage, hull to steel pile, in fresh water with magnesium anodes was 0.5V DC. This is near the top of the correct range (0.27-0.57V) and probably OK in fresh but not a good starting point to go into brackish or salt. With aluminium anodes I expect them to be 0.35V or thereabouts in fresh. It's easy to test just connect a voltmeter between your isolated hull and a nearby steel pile.
