We used a blue pillow case on a short pole. Only available to boats up
to 20m but it did the job.

Edward.
Where do you actually purchase a "blue flag"? I know we might be able to use a blue shirt as a substitute but we don't have one of those either.

We've trying to avoid buying something to use as a flag that we can use for something else. Might be able to use a blue hand towel for other purposes so maybe we will look into find one.

Curious how Ed's reply ended up in an old blue flag the magazine thread....

Replies by email to the Forum are matched to the 'correct' conversation by the Subject. Sometimes this can be useful, by recalling relevant previous conversation; sometimes not!

Note rule 8(b) of the 'Collision Regulations'* -
"Any alteration of course and/or speed to avoid collision shall, ..... be large enough to be readily apparent to another vessel .... a succession of small alterations of course and/or speed should be avoided."

In a small, more manoeuverable craft, making a very clear change of course is probably more reassuring to a commercial skipper than waving a flag! Neither will change the action of a big commercial much (if at all!), of course.

A clear change of course is the primary move and a cheerful wave of the
flag confirms you have seen his. It worked perfectly well for us.
Given the size of my ship they have no way of knowing whether I am +/-
20m. In fact it is 19.8 !
