Check if he is really French and not from such as French speaking Cote d'Ivoire. I had a very plausible scammer who nearly got me hooked when I first offered Mantra for sale. If he's not fully French, be very careful. Even if he is French, don't let your guard down. Let's hope that he's into money laundering. Otherwise it is not in a buyer's interest to pay cash.

Thanks Paul, we actually told him we thought he was a scammer as if he was so wealthy he would show up on Google, Facebook etc. yet there was no trace of him so beware of " Nathan Rabenstein" although I don't doubt there are millions of names they can come up with! We never heard anything further!

Obviously him not wanting to see the barge first or its survey is rather a giveaway. Payment by cash is not unheard of though. Our son sold his converted steel trawler to a guy who paid the full asking price in Swiss francs and wanted to take possession within a week. He took the money to his bank who said it was genuine so he walked away as a happy man. A few weeks later the ship was towed into Palma under arrest. The ship was being steered very erratically and was boarded by police and customs who found a small fortune in drugs on board.
