Where to buy no skid deck paint in France

We need to do repainting of side and top deck before we leave for winter. I checked on the Forum but only find references to paint in the UK, or owatrol. I am looking for something like Nautik Deck Grip. I find that on line but can't actually seem to find where to buy it in France. Went to the Nautic chandlery in Meaux and they say no they don't have and can't order and they don't have anything else what would work. We are open to suggestions for alternative products but we are inexperienced enough as it is that I tend to think adding sand or whatever to some other paint to get the non skid might well be a bit beyond newbie skills. I've done a lot of house painting in and out, but I've never painted metal before.
I assume that ordering and shipping for UK would not make sense - due to shipping costs and not even sure a product like paint can be shipped across borders.

Hi Sharon

International and other manufacturers make a Anti Slip "gradual" additive, this they sell in packets of about 100 grams, you mix one packet into 750 ml paint, which you then use as normal.

Available at chandlers or online by mail order.

When dry you have an anti slip finish in the colour that you want.

When I tried to buy some International Garage Floor paint (which is what Liberté's decks are painted with; 'anti-slip' rather than 'non-slip') my usual suppliers had none. On contacting parent company (who's name escapes me atm) I was told that the International brand had been discontinued and was referred to paints in the Dulux and Hammerite ranges.....

Stan. I don't know where you are but iI have a 5 litre tin of Teamac grey non slip deck paint which has the fine sand incorporated. It was supplied by mistake and they have not collected it after 2 years. We are on the nivernais heading for Migennes and then to Pont d Ouche for the winter moorings. If you are anywhere near I will bring it with me from the UK when we come back to France next week.

Fine sand in an old sock, converts any paint to non-slip. The ready made stuff has to be very well mixed as the sand falls to the bottom in storage and in my experience still gives an uneven surface, fine for garages but not for decks. The sand-sock works very well you can control the degree of non-slip.

Sorry Pete, can you be a bit more specific? How does sand in a sock convert to non-slip paint on a deck?

Put fine sand in sock.
Paint deck
Gently rub sock above wet paint.

Hi Nigel

International has died as a domestic brand name, but is alive and well as a Marine brand.

Anti slip additive from Midland Chandlers (they do postal delivery) here (brought some last week when in the UK), Or at H2O in France.

http://www.midlandchandlers.co.uk/Catalogue/ProductDetail/international-non-slip-additive?productID=55854834-47c4-4bed-92bc-3b0c026450bd&catalogueLevelItemID=db35c464-ba01-4107-88f2-70f754afc9eb

Keep stirring the tin after adding. Nowhere near as abrasive as sand when dry, if someone falls and puts their hands out.

Stan / Sharron

If using sand, used "washed" children's play sand, any salt in sea sand plays hell with the paint.

Hope this helps

I strongly prefer 'plastic' non skid additive, any serious paint supplier should be able to deliver.

It doesn't sag to quick in the paint, it's not walked out of the finished surface, no color change, etc.

David,

Sorry - I just saw this now. I hope Stan saw and replied earlier. We are hanging around Meaux waiting for a package to arrive. I don’t think we are close enough to make it work and it is probably too late by now anyway. Thank you for your generous offer though.

When I had my boat painted the guy doing the work told me to put the normal coats of paint on the deck . Then on the final coat use a fine sieve ( The metal one from the galley worked just fine ) to sieve kiln dried sand on to the surface . The next morning sweep off the excess and then use a soft roller to apply another coat of paint on top of the sand. I found another coat on top of that one made it easier to clean .It is a very abrasive finish but non-slip.

Or better, use the old sock I mentioned earlier, which gives more control than a sieve. The extra paint on top of the sand is a good idea and still leaves it non-slip. Advantage - choose the paint you want to use and don't be restricted to the limited range of non-slip paints.
