I want a single pack gloss enamel to paint my topsides (to go over 12 year old Masons enamel which is in reasonably good condition).

Any recommendations as to make and UK supplier (HMG seems popular).

I have used UKpaintdepot.com and have been very satisfied with them. They have a location in France and will deliver to any location you specify.

Seem to be aimed at house paints rather than marine/veh paints.

Yes, I use their trade professional gloss alkyd paint. If you are looking for full on marine paint, they are not your solution.

We have used Johnstones Metal and Cladding paint and found that it stands up excetionally well. The only *problem* has been the red which has faded in 2 years but the Johnstone's tec rep says we didn't put enough coats on (there was only one coat)  WE have used a semi-gloss, which hides or at least diminishes the dings and dents of our 107 year old dame.

Epifanes from here:

http://www.boatpaint.co.uk/acatalog/Epifanes-Marine-Paints.htm

I have been very satisfied with both the paint and the supplier. I find that a little Owatrol in the paint helps too.
They stock (supply) other paint brands too.

Thanks for the replies - any coments on HMG which seems popular with Sagar owners (I don't need to cover 100 year old dents :-) so I am looking for a compromise between good finish and cost tending to the former.

I can think of lots of comments on HMG* - but not about paint!

Thinking of paint rather than suppliers, Epiphanes is the gold standard in Netherlands (and elsewhere, being a big company); Jotun in UK is very good and cheaper; Sigmamarine is the choice of discerning commercials in Belgium and relatively cheap at the right (commercial) chandler. I've used all those and have been pleased with them. The 'best' brand of paint largely depends where you are.

Craftmaster paint ....best marine paint I have used ...high solids content and they will mix you any colour you want ...use their ppa flowing agent (or owatrol) and drying time is extended and brush strokes flow out...very helpful on the phone too

Thanks all - Epifanes is a silly price for bespoke enamel colours (a Masons shade) so will go with Craftmaster or Firwood paints.

I will never take the barge into a 'marine' environment if I can avoid it - so I am satisfied with top end DULUX house paint - seems to work well and doesn't cost half of my pension.
My real problem is learning how to fill the 98 years of dints so that it doesn't look as if it has been applied by a blind drunk !!
Cheers

Graham, we are also very happy with the best quality Trade paint meant for metal and bridges. Our experience with Johnstones is atisfactory in that it stands up VERY well and is long lasting. Quality pays. Our old Dame is 107 years old and we have decided to not fill the dings and dents because we don't want to diminish her experience and make her look like an old grandmother with a face lift.  ;-)

Most commercials you see painting their barges seem to use one of the 'ship' paints, not house or bridge paint. They're not noted for extravagance. Perhaps they know something. Of course they don't pay the 'yottie' prices for little tins. Large tins of Epiphanes or Sigmamarine can be half the retail price from a commercial's chandler.

I find the 'real thing' gives a better lasting finish than Dulux's finest. Just today I'm rubbing down some two-year-old Dulux (looking a bit sad) to add a topcoat of Sigma bootlak.

When I started barging 9 years ago, I was horrified by the prices of marine paint. Clever as I was in those days, I went to the nearest DIY superstore and bought lots of paint for a fraction of the Epifanes prices. I needed 3 coats for a reasonable finish and the paint lasted only one year.

I then tried Epifanes and needed one coat only. And the stuff looks better after 3 years then that DIY stuff after 6 month.

So if you look at it logically, Epifanes is a bargin.....
