I would like to buy a Dutch Sailing Barge for a liveaboard and future retirement in Europe hopefully. I had the wonderful and amazing experience of renting one for a week in Amsterdam last April. I live in Seattle, a wonderful place but unfortunately there is not a barge to be found so I would have to have one shipped over here. Any advice, info or experience would be very helpful. I guess the main topics would be a survey, purchase, & shipping. Of course there are other concerns such as taxes, regulations, & related things that will involve a list a mile long. And yes, as you are probably thinking, this will involve a huge learning curve, lots of planning, research and time.
Thanks and have a great day,
David

hi david

There is a roll on - roll off ferry that runs from Belgium (Antwerp I think), calls at Liverpool, then crosses the Atlantic (not sure of the landfall on the US side), but it was East coast, maybe a rail transfer from there?.

They have used several boats of quite large sizes from Liverpool. I spoke to a shipping agent / boat delivery company in the Liverpool area several years ago, about a Liverpool - Belgium delivery, but cannot find their name unfortunately, I recall it was not too expensive.

Try talking to a shipping agent on your side of the water.

The guy who wrote "Long Dog To Carcasone" used this service to take his narrowboat over the pond.

Hope this helps

Terry Darlington, for it was he who had a narrow rather than long dog, is an approachable guy. A mail to tm-E80AeWc+***@public.gmane.org will, I do not doubt, get you details of shipping his nb as deck cargo. I seem to recall it was welded on ....

Hello,
Having been the load-and-stow Lloyd's ship surveyor for one of the busy yacht shipping companies on the west coast of the Americas (shipping yachts all over the world) if you would like to send me a message I can fill you in on the details.

Best wishes,

Beside deck cargo there are also yacht transport company's.

a flat bottom barge will be easy to transport, so this might be overkill:

You could always sail it, a narrow boat can do it, albeit west to east see iwn.iwai.ie/v29i2/ifrances.PDF
