What Thickness of Gland Packing should I Buy?

I need to repack my stuffing box and have measured the gap at 14 to 15mm.
ASAP Supplies only have 13 or 16mm square gland packing and they tell me the 16mm will be OK.
Are they correct?

Hi Chris

The old 5/8" is 16mm, so buy that one, before cutting your "turns" to length, place the packing on a flat surface and slightly flatten with a hammer (gentle does it). It will reduce in thickness and increase in width. Cut to length and use in the normal fashion, and Bob's your Uncle.

Have dome this many times when repacking water pumps etc.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Balliol. quite correct

It is easy to take things for granted, and not think from the inexperienced view.
