My current Vacuum Cleaner has just broken down, so I need to replace it, however as I intend to become a liveboardee next year, the question of choice should be tailored for use on board. I am looking at a Dyson as first look, but not confined to that brand.

My problem is not having lived aboard before I am not sure which size/style or wired or rechargeable would best suit that environment, many of the things not considered for a on shore domestic one would be of importance like storage/power source for example would a rechargeable one be an advantage as it could be recharged while you have either the Genny or engine on, and used without the use of Battery/inverter.

The Barge I intend to have will be about 57ft by 13.5ft and will have both wooden and carpet floors.

Does anyone use a steam cleaner and is it worth its storage space ?

Charles,

I have no idea why carpets become dirtier faster and the dirt goes deeper than those at home.
It's all about efficiency and getting into those nooks and crannies. I use a hard-wired Dyson - small mains powered & bagless is the way to go.
Also recommended a Karcher window cleaner.
Both very effective and easy to stow.

we have the Vax equivalent of what Nigel has, plus I would second the Karcher window vac recommendation. Buy the vacuum cleaner soon while you can still get one that has real suction (per EU changes to power levels). Also get some sort of Aquavac for watery jobs.

Ordered by Dyson DC 25 Multi Floor last-night from Tesco Direct, which is part of the trade-in promotion currently running with various chain's and seems a good time to buy.

I did check prices from Curries and was surprised that there were different promotional discounts as follows:~

Tesco was GBP 110/- i.e. 299 reduced to 189
Curries was GBP 80/- i.e. 299 reduced to 219

If anyone else is planing to take advantage of this promotion which is open until 29 Oct, then I suggest you check the different levels of
reduction from the various stores

Charles - Most of these suggestions are for cleaners with half the performance and twice the price of a Henry!

I had a stupid battery Dyson that was already on the boat - useless - as are all battery ones unless your carpet is the size of a Welcome mat. I then bought a small mains "stair" cleaner - quite good but with a silly little dirt box that needed emptying twice per clean and the brush easily clogged by hair. I then brought out my home Henry to see if it would be too unweieldy for use on board. With less than all the metal tubes fitted, it's ideal. Plenty of power, huge disposable cheap bags and accessories for most things - all for under £100.
