To get the best value in bunkering (refueling), either Red or white Diesel, and for that matter the domestic heating oils for CH. it makes sense to have installed sufficiently large integral tanks for each of the grades, to make it worth while having tanker deliveries of a worthwhile quantity, and this is what I am planing in my perspective design. This of course would be pointless if the suppliers refuse to deliver to a barge.
From what I understand, from reading the various, topics in this forum, is that many of the local companies claim that their Insurance does not cover deliveries to a barge ( with fear of spillage ) and subsequently refuse to deliver, which in effect leaves the members of the DBA at the mercy of the Marina's , who historically have not offered the best prices.
Would it not be possible for The DBA management to negotiate, one of two forms of insurance as follows:~

1). Get the DBA preferred Insurance provider(s) as listed in this site or advertise in the BF, to add a cover to their policies to cover fuel deliveries to the insured barge, which could be either an automatic cover with their policy or an optional extra cover.

2). The DBA arrange a collective cover for all members or a collective cover which we could opt into. The first collective cover option would be a similar type of arrangement to that of travel insurance automatically given, when you charge a travel fare to a Credit card or that offered with a HSBC premier account.

If sufficient members supported this idea, then perhaps the DBA Management, might be persuade to investigate one of the above with the various Insurance companies trying to get DBA members custom

Any ideas out there if it might be worth a try or any drawbacks

Having had a few deliveries over the years I remember a couple of drivers who I wouldn't insure to cut a loaf of bread. I don't think we can take responsibility for the quality of the delivery company's staff/training/economising.

It must be better to try to encourage companies to deliver to barges by using our purchasing power than by paying for their insurance. This is the approach we began a while back, perhaps it just needs refreshing. I recall we did find one provider who would (and do still?) guarantee barge deliveries but they were a little greedy on the price - I don't think I have ever used them.

I have never had problems getting fuel by tanker in Belgium or France. I must say that the drivers are very pleased when they see that the filler on board will take their full size hose nozzle and with the tankers discharge on tickover no problems at all, good sized breather pipes also help. The majority of new builds seem to have very narrow filling pipes which are more suited to garage style pumps than the flow rates of road tankers.and the drivers don't like these as it is possible to get blow back of fuel which can find its way into the waterway. The builders merchant group Big Mat will deliver 500 litres. David
